The Rumford-Mexico Sewerage District , a licensed 2.65 Million Gallon/Day (MGD) Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) serves the wastewater collection and treatment needs of the three communities of Rumford, Mexico and Dixfield and receives septage from all of western Maine since 1976.
The Clean Water Act of 1976 was created by local resident and Senator Edmund S. Muskie. For over five decades, the Rumford-Mexico Sewerage District has been committed to safeguarding our communities and the vital Androscoggin River Watershed by providing safe, reliable, and affordable wastewater services to the River Valley area in Western Maine.

How We Serve You
Our Comprehensive services include:
- Wastewater Collection: Utilizing a system of interceptor sewers and pumping stations to efficiently gather and transport sewage from municipal collection systems to our treatment facilities.
- Biological Treatment: Rumford-Mexico Sewerage District operates two licensed activated sludge treatment plants, the main plant located at 228 River Road, Mexico and the Rumford Point Facility located at 1741 RT.2, Rumford Point Maine. Both facilities treat wastewater to meet stringent environmental standards before it’s safely discharged to the watershed of the Androscoggin River.
Our staff has over 120 years of combined wastewater treatment and management experience featuring 3 Grade VB, 1 Grade IVB and 4 Grade IIB operators; who have ownership and pride in protecting the public health, safety and overall quality of life along the Androscoggin River.
